Bendigo Bank has appointed experienced UK banking executive Christopher Dean as Chief Customer Officer, Consumer Banking, as the lender seeks to accelerate its digital capabilities and strengthen customer growth.
Mr Dean will join Bendigo Bank’s executive team and formally begin the Melbourne-based role in September 2026.
He has been appointed but has not yet commenced in the position.
More than two decades of banking experience
Mr Dean brings more than 20 years of experience across retail, business and wealth banking.
Before joining Bendigo Bank, he held several senior positions at HSBC UK, including Managing Director and Head of Retail Banking, Wealth and Mortgage Distribution.
He previously spent 14 years at Barclays, where he worked in leadership roles across the bank’s consumer and business divisions.
Bendigo Bank said his experience includes managing large branch networks, improving customer experience, leading employees and delivering digital transformation.
His background in both traditional branch banking and digital services is expected to support the bank as it continues modernising its consumer operations.
Responsibility for consumer and retail banking
As Chief Customer Officer, Consumer Banking, Mr Dean will oversee Bendigo Bank’s consumer and retail businesses.
His responsibilities will include supporting customer growth, improving service delivery and strengthening the processes, products and digital systems used by retail customers.
The position will focus on simplifying customer-facing processes and making banking services more intuitive across branch and digital channels.
Bendigo Bank Chief Executive Officer Richard Fennell said Mr Dean’s experience would help the bank improve customer journeys and sharpen its digital offerings for its 2.9 million customers.
The role covers consumer banking rather than the bank’s business and agribusiness operations.
Adam Rowse to return to business and agribusiness role
When Mr Dean commences in September, Adam Rowse will resume his position as Chief Customer Officer, Business and Agribusiness.
The arrangement separates executive responsibility for consumer banking from business and agricultural banking.
This should allow Mr Dean to concentrate on retail customers, including areas such as deposits, home lending, branches and digital banking, while Mr Rowse focuses on business and agribusiness customers.
The bank has not announced any broader workforce or structural changes as part of Mr Dean’s appointment.

Digital development a key priority
Mr Dean said he intended to build on Bendigo Bank’s history of customer and digital innovation.
The bank highlighted several developments, including its Community Bank model, mobile-focused digital bank Up, the Bendigo Lending Platform and expanded digital onboarding capabilities.
Up operates as a digital banking brand within Bendigo and Adelaide Bank and is designed primarily around mobile banking.
Mr Dean said he wanted to accelerate the bank’s digital capabilities while developing deeper relationships with retail customers.
The appointment suggests Bendigo Bank will continue pursuing a model combining its regional and branch presence with faster and more streamlined digital services.
Focus on simpler customer experiences
Banks are increasingly investing in digital onboarding, automated lending processes and mobile account servicing as customers expect more transactions to be completed without visiting a branch.
However, Bendigo Bank also maintains a substantial physical and community-based network, meaning its consumer strategy must support both digital users and customers who prefer face-to-face services.
Mr Dean’s previous experience overseeing retail banking, mortgage distribution and branch networks may help the bank coordinate those different service channels.
His success will likely be assessed against customer growth, service quality, digital adoption, operational efficiency and risk outcomes.
Appointment takes effect in September
Bendigo Bank’s announcement confirms the appointment and its intended executive structure, but it does not specify an exact commencement date within September.
Until Mr Dean formally assumes the position, existing leadership arrangements will remain in place.
The most accurate description is that Christopher Dean has been appointed as Bendigo Bank’s next Chief Customer Officer for Consumer Banking and will join the executive team in September 2026.
