NSW Device Bank to help people and communities get online

Thousands of refurbished laptops are on their way to communities across NSW, as part of a pilot program bridging the digital divide.

The new 12-month pilot program will see surplus government laptops distributed to people facing barriers to connect, learn and participate in an increasingly digital world.

With 61 per cent of people in low-income households and 64 per cent of those living in regional and remote NSW experiencing affordability barriers to getting online, the NSW Device Bank aims to increase digital access and participation as a centrepiece initiative under the NSW Government’s Digital Inclusion Strategy.

The program will provide decommissioned and refurbished laptops, internet access and digital literacy support to eligible recipients, while reducing e-waste and promoting sustainable asset reuse.

Laptops will be distributed through a collaboration with trusted community organisations and registered charities across metropolitan, regional and remote NSW, ensuring support is accessible and responsive to local needs.

All donated laptops will have data securely removed and will be refurbished and quality tested to ensure they are safe, reliable and ready for immediate use.

The NSW Device Bank is being delivered in partnership by NSW Telco Authority and WorkVentures.

Minister for Customer Service and Digital Government, Jihad Dib said:

“Access to safe and reliable technology is now essential for everyday life. The NSW Device Bank is a practical step toward digital equity, giving people the tools, connectivity and skills they need to fully participate in modern society.

“As government services, education and employment continue to move online – and digital exclusion becomes a growing risk – we need to make sure no one is getting left behind.

“Our nation leading Digital Inclusion Strategy focuses on removing barriers to digital access and I am very pleased we have established a program that supports a fairer more connected NSW.”

NSW Telco Authority Managing Director, Kylie De Courteney said:

“NSW Telco Authority is committed to ensuring everyday connectivity is accessible and inclusive for communities across the state.

“Through our partnership with WorkVentures, we are repurposing government laptops to deliver both social and environmental benefits, while supporting a more equitable digital future.

“The NSW Device Bank underpins the aims and outcomes of the NSW Digital Inclusion Strategy and shows how refurbished technology can open doors to learning, connection and opportunities for people who would otherwise be digitally excluded.”
