Sydney Metro West is entering its next major construction phase, with the first tracks set to be laid at Sydney Olympic Park.
More than 5,300 tonnes of rail will progressively be lowered 27 metres into the future Sydney Olympic Park Metro station before being welded and moved into the tunnels.
Around 4,376 individual 20-metre rail sections will be delivered, with a team of about 20 workers spending three months welding the track together.
Once the rail is positioned, work will begin on the structural track base slab, followed by electrical and mechanical fit-out later this year.

Across the project, around 60 kilometres of track will eventually be installed through the twin tunnels and the Clyde Stabling and Maintenance Facility.
John Holland is delivering the line-wide rail systems package, including track, tunnel fit-out, power, ventilation, lighting, drainage and other operational infrastructure.
The 24-kilometre Sydney Metro West line will connect Westmead with Hunter Street in the Sydney CBD and is targeting an opening date of 2032. It is expected to double rail capacity between Greater Parramatta and the CBD.
Planned journey times include 22 minutes from Westmead to Hunter Street, 15 minutes from Sydney Olympic Park to Hunter Street and seven minutes between Westmead and Sydney Olympic Park.
The project will also support major housing precincts planned around future stations, including Sydney Olympic Park, Burwood North, Pyrmont and The Bays.
The arrival of the first rail marks the transition from tunnelling towards the systems and fit-out work required to turn the underground infrastructure into an operating metro railway.
