The NSW Liberal and Nationals Government is calling on communities in the state’s South East and Tablelands to have their say on the future of the region’s road and transport network.
Minister for Infrastructure, Cities and Active Transport Rob Stokes said the draft South East and Tablelands Regional Transport Plan is now out for consultation and outlines the Government’s vision for the region’s transport infrastructure and services.
“The NSW Liberal and Nationals Government have an unrivalled track record in building infrastructure and this is our plan to make moving around the South East and Tablelands easier, more convenient, cheaper and healthier,” Mr Stokes said.
“We know better connections to Canberra, the Illawarra-Shoalhaven and Greater Sydney will make this region a better place to live, visit and invest.
“From Merimbula and Jindabyne to Queanbeyan and Goulburn, this incredible region is rapidly growing. It is important we plan for the future of our transport network, including better walking and cycling connections, to reflect the changing nature of travel in these areas.”
Minister for Regional Transport and Roads Sam Farraway said with more people choosing to call regional NSW home projects and initiatives listed in the draft plan would cater for the expected population growth.
“The NSW Liberal and Nationals Government’s $19.4 billion regional road and transport infrastructure pipeline is securing a brighter future for regional NSW,” Mr Farraway said.
“We have incredible game changing projects already underway like the Nelligen Bridge, which is a year ahead of schedule, and the Princes Highway Upgrade program that will make travel through these regions quicker and safer.
“With every road we upgrade we strengthen our state’s supply chain by providing more direct routes which saves time and lowers the costs of moving produce and goods across the state.
“Since 2019, we have delivered an additional 2,500 bus services across our regions and this plan outlines how we can expand on that.
“The former Labor Government left our state with a $30 billion infrastructure backlog in 2011, and they have made their disdain for major transformative infrastructure projects known.
“On the back of some tough years for our state it’s important now more than ever we have the energy and vision to ensure our state remains prosperous with a bright future ahead of it.”
The draft plan outlines the initiatives being investigated to support the region’s future growth, development, changes in land use and travel demand over the next 20 years and covers the Local Government Areas of Bega Valley, Eurobodalla, Goulburn Mulwaree, Hilltops, Queanbeyan-Palerang, Snowy Monaro, Upper Lachlan, Wingecarribee and Yass Valley.
Public consultation on the Draft South East and Tablelands Regional Transport Plan will be open until Friday 24 February 2023.
