The original entranceway to one of Sydney’s most historic public spaces has reopened today, following restoration works by Greater Sydney Parklands.
Minister for Infrastructure, Cities and Active Transport Rob Stokes said the restoration of the Balmain Road Gates was made possible by a record $14 million NSW Government investment in the revitalisation of Callan Park.
“This is the most significant investment in Callan Park for a generation, which helps celebrate the heritage and beauty of this important space while enhancing it for future generations,” Mr Stokes said.
“These newly restored gates will showcase Callan Park as a place where history and community meet against the backdrop of our iconic Harbour.
“The gates were constructed in 1878 as the entranceway for carriages and pedestrians to the Callan Park Hospital. Now they will welcome people on bikes, scooters and skateboards into a harbourside park.”
The Bonnyview and The Summerhouse heritage buildings will also soon receive leasing and activation proposals. Proposals for the Repatriation Ward, known as Building 497, have now closed, with an announcement expected soon on the successful lessee.
Greater Sydney Parklands Chief Executive Suellen Fitzgerald said the community was united in wanting to see Callan Park’s heritage and natural assets restored and activated.
“We are seeing that coming to fruition with an iconic entrance open once more, heritage buildings restored for adaptive reuse, and public space enhanced,” Ms Fitzgerald.
“This is just the beginning. With the passage of new legislation establishing Greater Sydney Parklands as a city-wide parkland agency, we’ll implement further positive change.
We’re determined to lead Callan Park’s transformation to become one of the greatest in Sydney.”
Details of heritage restoration can be found on the Callan Park website.
