The NSW Government has hit a major milestone in the state’s most comprehensive Curriculum Reform in a generation, with the release of draft English and Mathematics syllabuses for primary and secondary school students.
Minister for Education and Early Learning Sarah Mitchell said the draft syllabuses continue to focus on strengthening literacy and numeracy skills across every year level.
“We have already delivered a new Kindergarten to Year 2 English and Mathematics curriculum, which will lay the groundwork for these new and streamlined syllabuses for Years 3 to 10 students,” Ms Mitchell said.
“Our focus is on lifting standards in reading, writing and numeracy so providing all students with a great education and the benefits that brings.
“The new syllabuses set out essential learning so that every student achieves in the mandated subjects of English and Mathematics and can access more learning opportunities at school and throughout their pathways after school.
“We are now asking NSW teachers, parents, students and the broader community to provide their feedback on the draft curriculum in these areas.”
Key features of the English and Mathematics 3–6 and 7–10 syllabuses:
A stronger progression of learning across the early and middle years, building on the new English and Mathematics K–2 syllabuses.
More targeted learning outcomes create more time for deeper learning.
In English, a more explicit focus on writing skills, as well as a continued focus on studying literature, to improve writing, grammar and use of language.
In Mathematics, a greater focus on reasoning and problem solving.
Greater clarity on essential learning. For example, new ‘core’ topics in Mathematics 7–10 make it clear what students should know, while ‘options’ topics enable teachers to tailor classes to students’ needs.
Clearer links and preparation for Year 11 and 12 courses, as well as post-school skills and pathways.

The new syllabuses will be available to NSW schools from 2023. The NSW Government continues its work to deliver a new K to 12 NSW Curriculum by 2024.
