Coalition support remains at post-election low of 34pc

Support for the Morrison government remains at a post-election low of 34 per cent after what the government itself says has been a “difficult” few months.

Labor has maintained its primary support at 41 per cent, according to the Newspoll published in The Australian.

It is the largest margin between the two major parties since August 2018 and comes just months before a federal election must be called.

Support for the Greens dropped to 8 per cent from 11 per cent.

Satisfaction with Prime Minister Scott Morrison rose 1 point to 40, while satisfaction with Opposition Leader Anthony Albanese dropped 3 points to 40.

Pessimism about the next election is deepening in Liberal ranks after heavy swings against the NSW government during the Super Saturday of byelections cast a cloud on the party’s prospects of picking up a seat crucial to Prime Minister Scott Morrison’s hopes of clinging to power.

A big swing against the Perrottet government in its Liberal heartland on Sydney’s north shore has also highlighted the threat posed by independents to MPs in blue-ribbon seats.
