Omicron plus summer holidays a ‘perfect storm’

NSW Premier Dominic Perrottet says national cabinet will discuss requirements for furloughed health staff.

He says its “only natural in a pandemic” for the health system to be under pressure.

But Perrottet says the cabinet will consider changes to definitions of close contacts for health staff to ease requirements for health staff.

NSW Health deputy secretary Susan Pearce says there is “no evidence” of reports that infected and symptomatic staff are being sent back to work in hospitals.

She says about 3000 staff are furloughed because of COVID-19.

Pearce says the mix of omicron and the summer holidays has been a “perfect storm” for the health system, with exploding cases and staff going on holiday.
