PADDINGTON The Musical will make its Australian premiere at Sydney’s Capitol Theatre in September 2027, bringing the stage adaptation of Michael Bond’s much-loved character to Australia for the first time.
Sydney will become the third city to host the production, following its West End debut in London and a planned Broadway season in New York. The Australian premiere has been secured with support from Destination NSW. (destinationnsw.com.au)
From London to Broadway and Sydney
The musical is based on Michael Bond’s Paddington stories and the award-winning STUDIOCANAL film franchise.
The production premiered in London in 2025 and quickly became one of the West End’s major new musicals, attracting strong advance ticket sales before opening.
It went on to win seven Olivier Awards in 2026, including Best New Musical, establishing the production as one of the most successful new stage shows to emerge from London in recent years. (officiallondontheatre.com)
A Broadway production is also scheduled for 2027, meaning Sydney will follow London and New York as the next international market for the show. (broadway.paddingtonthemusical.com)
Capitol Theatre to Host Australian Season
The Australian production will open at the Capitol Theatre, one of Sydney’s major musical theatre venues.
The show is produced by Sonia Friedman Productions, STUDIOCANAL and Eliza Lumley Productions, with Australian producer Suzanne Jones joining the local season.
Producers have indicated the Sydney version will maintain the scale and creative approach of the original London production rather than being presented as a reduced touring version. (paddingtonthemusical.com.au)
Further details on the Australian cast, exact opening date and length of the Sydney season are expected to be announced closer to 2027.
Production Based on the Paddington Story
The stage musical follows Paddington, the Peruvian bear who arrives in London and is taken in by the Brown family.
Like the books and films, the production centres on themes of family, belonging and Paddington’s experiences adjusting to a new home, combining comedy with large-scale musical theatre staging.
The character was created by British author Michael Bond, whose first Paddington book was published in 1958. Paddington later became the subject of television adaptations and a successful series of feature films.
The musical draws particularly on the world established in STUDIOCANAL’s 2014 Paddington film while developing the story specifically for the stage.
Sydney Season Expected to Attract Interstate Visitors
The NSW Government estimates the Sydney season could attract more than 100,000 visitors and generate over $64 million in visitor expenditure.
Those figures are forecasts rather than confirmed economic results and are based on the expected impact of audiences travelling to Sydney for the production. (destinationnsw.com.au)
Major musical theatre productions can generate spending beyond ticket sales, particularly across accommodation, dining, transport and other visitor activities when audiences travel from interstate or regional NSW.
The production will also add to Sydney’s broader 2027 cultural calendar, which is expected to include Vivid Sydney, Tropfest, Sydney Festival, Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras and several major art exhibitions.
Part of NSW Visitor Economy Strategy
Destination NSW has increasingly used major theatre productions, exhibitions, sporting events and festivals as part of its strategy to attract overnight visitors.
The state’s current Visitor Economy Strategy includes a target of reaching $91 billion in annual visitor expenditure by 2035. (destinationnsw.com.au)
Securing exclusive or first-run cultural productions is one part of that approach, particularly where events can encourage interstate and international audiences to travel to Sydney.
