$5 Million Penrith Lakes Fishing Park Planned for Western Sydney

The NSW Government has committed $5 million to develop a new recreational fishing park at Penrith Lakes, with the project expected to be completed in 2028.

The proposed Penrith Lakes Fishing Park would convert two existing artificial lakes into publicly accessible fishing areas for Western Sydney. Planning and design work is currently underway.

Two Lakes to Open for Public Fishing

The two lakes identified for the project are currently closed to public access.

Under the proposal, they would be upgraded with fishing platforms, accessible ramps, walking tracks, car parking and picnic facilities.

Other planned infrastructure includes fish-cleaning tables, fishing-line disposal bins, seating and toilets.

Fish Stocking Program Begins

More than 200 Australian bass have been released into the lakes as the first stage of a broader fish-stocking program.

The project is expected to include both mature and juvenile native fish to establish a sustainable recreational fishery.

Australian bass have previously been stocked within the wider Penrith Lakes system, although the landlocked nature of the lakes means populations require active management and stocking.

Focus on Accessible Recreation

The fishing park is being designed to provide shore-based fishing opportunities for families, beginners and people with disability, without requiring access to a boat.

The proposal follows consultation undertaken as part of the NSW Recreational Fishing Action Plan, where improved access to fishing locations was identified as a priority.

Penrith Lakes is already being progressively developed for recreation, tourism and public open space, with planning controls covering water quality, flood risk, access and environmental management.

Completion Targeted for 2028

Detailed planning and design will continue before construction begins.

The NSW Government says the completed fishing park is expected to open in 2028, adding another publicly accessible recreation area within the broader Penrith Lakes precinct.
