NSW reports 34,994 cases, six deaths

NSW has officially reported 34,994 daily cases, down from 35,054 yesterday, and six more deaths.

There are 1609 people in hospital, up 7 per cent from 1491 yesterday and 131 in intensive care, up from 119.

Experts say the official figures are five to 10 times lower than the actual number of cases in the community because of the lack of rapid tests, long queues for PCR tests and days-long wait for results.

The gap between the official figures and the true number of cases in the community will only increase after the federal government slashed testing requirements late yesterday to reduce pressure on the system.

Among those changes, anyone who receives a positive rapid test no longer needs to confirm this with a PCR test, and so will no longer be automatically counted in the daily state government figures.
