Western Sydney’s hospital capacity is set to expand, with 60 additional beds planned across Blacktown and Mount Druitt hospitals and two new operating theatres to be delivered at Blacktown Hospital.
Construction of 30 new beds at Blacktown Hospital is progressing ahead of schedule and is expected to be completed later this year, around 12 months earlier than originally planned.
Two additional operating theatres will also be built at Blacktown Hospital as part of the project. The new theatres are expected to be completed in 2027 and will increase surgical capacity while reducing pressure on existing facilities.
The upgrades form part of a $120 million NSW Government investment in Blacktown and Mount Druitt hospitals.
A further 30 beds will be delivered at Mount Druitt Hospital, with construction expected to begin in the coming months. FDC Construction (NSW) Pty Ltd has been appointed to carry out the works, which are scheduled for completion in late 2027.
The additional capacity is intended to improve patient flow, support emergency and surgical services, and give hospital staff more space to provide care.
Broader Expansion of Hospital Capacity
The Blacktown and Mount Druitt project forms part of a wider state program to deliver 2,500 additional hospital beds and treatment spaces across New South Wales.
Other planned investments include $38 million for 18 additional beds in specialist areas at Westmead Hospital, including respiratory medicine, cardiology and the emergency department short-stay unit.
The NSW Government has also allocated $11.9 billion over four years for 32 new or upgraded hospitals across the state.
Major Western Sydney projects include:
- $910 million for the new Rouse Hill Hospital, including a $120 million Commonwealth contribution
- $2 billion for a new Bankstown Hospital
- $630 million for the Fairfield Hospital redevelopment, including $80 million in Commonwealth funding
- $400 million for the Canterbury Hospital redevelopment
The new Rouse Hill Hospital is expected to include an emergency department, maternity and birthing services, and a range of other clinical facilities.
Deputy Premier and Minister for Western Sydney Prue Car said the upgrades would allow more families to access healthcare closer to home.
“We are investing in the healthcare infrastructure Western Sydney needs, from expanding Blacktown and Mount Druitt hospitals to delivering new hospitals at Rouse Hill and Bankstown,” Ms Car said.
“These projects will help local families continue to receive the care they need within their own communities.”
Health Minister Ryan Park said the additional beds and operating theatres would help hospitals treat patients more efficiently.
“These new beds, together with broader hospital investments, will help relieve pressure and improve the way patients move through the health system,” Mr Park said.
“Western Sydney needs more beds, more services and more staff, and these projects are designed to support that growth.”
Member for Blacktown Stephen Bali said construction of the additional beds marked an important step for patients, clinicians and hospital staff.
“Work is well underway to deliver 30 additional beds at Blacktown Hospital,” Mr Bali said.
“This builds on recent efforts to recruit more staff, strengthen health programs and improve the patient experience.”
Member for Mount Druitt Edmond Atalla said the upcoming works would provide a significant benefit for the local community.
“The delivery of 60 additional beds across Blacktown and Mount Druitt hospitals will improve both patient care and working conditions for staff,” Mr Atalla said.
Construction at Blacktown Hospital is expected to be completed later in 2026, while the Mount Druitt beds and Blacktown operating theatres are scheduled for completion in 2027.
