David Harris to Retire at 2027 NSW State Election

NSW Minister for the Central Coast David Harris has announced he will retire from state politics at the 13 March 2027 NSW election, ending a parliamentary career spanning 16 years.

Harris confirmed he will not re-contest his seat of Wyong, but will remain the local MP and continue performing his ministerial duties until the election.

Career in Parliament and Education

Before entering politics, Harris spent more than two decades working in public education as a teacher, school executive and principal.

He first entered the NSW Legislative Assembly as the Member for Wyong in 2007, serving until 2011 before returning to Parliament at the 2015 election.

His parliamentary career has included roles as a parliamentary secretary, shadow minister and government minister.

Harris currently holds portfolios including Aboriginal Affairs and Treaty, Gaming and Racing, Veterans, Medical Research and the Central Coast.

Focus on Wyong and Central Coast Projects

In announcing his retirement, Harris highlighted several projects and services delivered or progressed during his time representing Wyong, including investment in schools, ambulance and police infrastructure and upgrades to the region’s transport network.

He also pointed to the Pacific Highway upgrade through Wyong Town Centre as one of the major projects now moving towards construction.

The 2026–27 NSW Budget allocated $331.6 million over four years to commence construction of the Wyong Town Centre upgrade, jointly funded by the NSW and Australian governments.

Infrastructure NSW currently lists the project in the construction procurement phase, with an estimated project value between $250 million and $500 million and construction expected to begin in 2027.

Wyong Hospital Among Key Local Issues

Harris also referred to the future of Wyong Hospital, which became a major local political issue during his time in Parliament.

The hospital was previously considered for a public-private partnership model, before plans were changed and the redevelopment proceeded as a publicly operated facility.

Harris cited retaining the hospital in public ownership as one of the issues he regarded as significant during his representation of the electorate.

To Remain in Office Until March

Harris said his focus until the March election would remain on his responsibilities as Member for Wyong and as a Cabinet minister.

His retirement will create an open contest for the Wyong electorate at the 2027 election, with Labor required to select a new candidate.

Harris said he intends to remain on the Central Coast after leaving Parliament and spend more time with his family.
