A quarter of Australia’s red meat processors shut down

A quarter to a third of meat processing works have been closed because of the floods says the Minister for Regional Development Bridget McKenzie.

“This event has shut down 10 meat-processing works, which actually process a quarter to a third of Australia’s red meat,” Ms McKenzie tells ABC TV.

“Seven thousand people are in these 10 facilities that have been impacted by the floods. That’s a significant concern we’ve heard today.”

Ms McKenzie spoke after meeting business and agriculture leaders

“Then you’ve got the horticulture, everything from the magnificent macadamia and avocado industry to the grains industry and beyond.

“The impact on agriculture has been significant.
