Moderna’s booster shot increases immunity to omicron 37-fold

Moderna says its booster shot generates a 37-fold increase in immunity to the omicron variant.

In a statement released on Tuesday, the pharmaceutical giant said a 50 milligram booster shot increased “omicron neutralising antibody levels approximately 37-fold”.

Moderna chief executive Stéphane Bancel said: “the dramatic increase in COVID-19 cases from the omicron variant is concerning to all. However, these data showing that the currently authorised Moderna COVID-19 booster can boost neutralising antibody levels 37-fold higher than pre-boost levels are reassuring.”

The company also tested the impact of a 100 milligram booster and found it lifted antibody levels 87-fold. Booster shots of this size have not been authorised by the medical regulator.

Bancel said Moderna would continue to “respond to this highly transmissible variant” and “rapidly advance an Omicron-specific booster candidate into clinical testing in case it becomes necessary in the future”.
