Drivers, riders and pedestrians across New South Wales are being encouraged to refresh their knowledge of road rules as Road Rules Awareness Week 2026 gets underway.
Running from 21 to 27 September, the annual campaign is highlighting more than 350 road rules that apply across NSW and encouraging road users — including experienced drivers — to check whether their knowledge is still up to date.
As part of this year’s campaign, Transport for NSW has launched seven new online learning modules through its Road Safety Learning Lab.
Seven New Road Safety Modules
The new modules cover:
- Driving to the conditions
- Child car seat safety
- Fatigue
- Bicycle safety
- Alcohol and drug driving
- Road safety treatments
- Misunderstood road rules
The digital modules use real crash data, simulations, videos and quizzes to help people understand the reasons behind road rules and the potential consequences of unsafe decisions.
The broader Road Safety Learning Lab is an interactive platform developed by Transport for NSW for drivers, riders, pedestrians and people supervising learner drivers.
It includes simulated crash-testing experiences, practical videos and quizzes covering areas such as speed, pedestrian safety, motorcycle safety, bicycle safety, heavy vehicles and vehicle safety.
Focus on Pedestrians and Cyclists
This year’s campaign is also placing additional attention on rules involving vulnerable road users as pedestrian fatalities have increased during 2026.
Transport for NSW is encouraging motorists to review rules covering giving way to pedestrians, interacting safely with cyclists and sharing roads with other users.
The campaign aims to address rules that are often misunderstood even by experienced motorists.
NSW road safety resources identify common areas of confusion including roundabouts, merging, U-turns and the correct use of high-beam and fog lights.
Online Resources Available for All Road Users
People who want to test or refresh their road-rule knowledge can access several free resources, including:
- The NSW Road User Handbook
- The Top 10 Misunderstood Road Rules guide
- The Road Safety Learning Lab
- The Centre for Road Safety’s online information
- The free Driver Knowledge Test practice resources
- Resources for people supervising learner drivers
Transport for NSW says the Road Safety Learning Lab is designed to explain not only what the rules are, but also the safety reasoning behind them.
The initiative forms part of NSW’s wider Towards Zero approach, which aims to reduce deaths and serious injuries across the road network.
Road Rules Awareness Week continues across NSW until 27 September 2026.
