Southwest Metro Completes Trial Running as Opening Moves Closer

Southwest Metro has moved another significant step closer to opening, with the successful completion of its intensive five-week Trial Running program.

More than 130 operational scenarios were tested across the converted line, examining how the network performs under a range of normal and emergency operating conditions.

The program included a major emergency exercise simulating a fire on a moving train near Bankstown Station. Around 300 volunteers were safely evacuated during the exercise, which involved Fire and Rescue NSW, NSW Police and Transport for NSW.

With Trial Running now complete, the operator will continue refining systems including mechanical gap fillers and corridor protection procedures before passenger services begin.

Testing will also continue with driverless trains operating over set periods to assess network performance under different operating conditions and journey-time scenarios.

Sydney Metro and operator Metro Trains Sydney will now finalise documentation for independent regulatory assessment and the formal accreditation process.

Final works are also continuing at the ten upgraded stations between Marrickville and Bankstown, including platform asphalting, fencing, signage and plaza and concourse finishes.

Since testing began after the first metro train entered the converted line in April 2025, more than 5,800 of the required 9,000 testing hours and 24,235 of the required 30,000 kilometres have been completed.

To support final opening preparations, several M1 Metro closures are planned during September, including full line closures on 6 and 13 September and overnight closures on 7 and 9 September. Services between Chatswood and Sydenham will also close on 26 and 27 September.

Southwest Metro is expected to open later in 2026, although a final passenger service date will depend on the completion of remaining testing and all required regulatory approvals.
