NSW recreational fishers are set to benefit from a series of new initiatives, including almost $390,000 in grants for fishing facilities and education, proposed action against unauthorised fishing licence sellers, and new representative and advisory bodies for the sector.
Eighteen projects have received funding of up to $50,000 for fishing facilities and up to $10,000 for education initiatives delivered by local fishing clubs, councils, schools and community groups.
Funded projects include a $50,000 accessible fishing platform at Red Rock Reserve near Wooli, upgrades to fishing platforms at Walgett Weir, Como and Forster, replacement fish-cleaning facilities at the Menindee Lakes system, and resurfacing of boat ramps at Tuross Lake and Narooma.
Education projects will also receive support, including a local fishing guide by Merimbula Big Game & Lakes Angling Club and beginner and children’s fishing sessions delivered by Tumbulgum Fishing Club.
Applications are now open for the 2026 Recreational Fishing Trust grants, with the latest funding round closing on 9 October 2026.
The NSW Government is also proposing stronger action against unauthorised third-party websites that charge excessive processing fees for recreational fishing licences. The Government says it has received reports of customers being charged $128 for two one-month licences that should have cost $28.
The proposed crackdown forms part of reforms under the Fisheries Management Amendment (Enforcement) Bill 2026 and is intended to target unauthorised sellers without affecting approved fishing licence agents.
Meanwhile, Greg Seeto, Managing Director of Daiwa Australia and President of the Australian Fishing Trade Association, has been appointed interim Chair of the new NSW Recreational Fishing Peak Body.
The new body is being established to represent recreational fishers, promote sustainable fishing and improve access and participation. Mr Seeto will help oversee the appointment of the inaugural board and remain interim Chair until its first AGM.
The NSW Government is also establishing a Ministerial Fisheries Advisory Council to provide advice on recreational and commercial fishing, Aboriginal fishing, aquaculture and conservation. Expressions of interest for membership are expected to open shortly.
The Aboriginal Fishing Advisory Council and Recreational Fishing Trusts Advisory Council will continue in their existing roles.
