Drivers across NSW renewing eligible private vehicle registrations from 1 September will receive up to $100 off their registration costs, while motorcyclists will receive up to $80 off.
The one-off registration discount is expected to benefit the owners of more than 4.4 million vehicles across NSW.
Around 360,000 privately owned light vehicles are due for registration renewal in September alone.
For motorists whose registration was due in July or August 2026, the discount will instead apply when their eligible registration is renewed in 2027.
Eligible motorists do not need to apply for the discount. It will automatically be applied when an eligible private light vehicle or motorcycle is due for registration, when a new eligible vehicle is registered in NSW, or when an eligible vehicle is re-registered after previously being unregistered.
The discount applies to registrations with an effective renewal date between 1 September 2026 and 31 August 2027.
Motorists who register their vehicle for six-month periods will receive the discount on a pro-rata basis, with $50 deducted for eligible light vehicles and $40 for motorcycles for each six-month registration period.
The discount is available for privately registered light vehicles and motorcycles, but does not apply to business vehicles, trailers and caravans, heavy vehicles, plant vehicles or conditionally registered vehicles.
The registration relief forms part of the NSW Government’s 12-month Transport Affordability Package, which also includes a $50 weekly toll cap and a freeze on Opal fares at 2025 levels.
Minister for Roads and Regional Transport Jenny Aitchison said the automatic discount was designed to provide cost-of-living relief without requiring motorists to submit a separate application.
