Michael Dwyer Appointed Chair of the State Super Board

Experienced superannuation and investment executive Michael Dwyer AM has been appointed Chair of the State Super Board, with his appointment to take effect from 1 September 2026.

State Super, formally known as the SAS Trustee Corporation, announced the appointment as it strengthens the board’s governance, investment oversight and long-term strategic capability.

Mr Dwyer will succeed the board’s acting leadership arrangements, with Acting Chair Catherine Bolger welcoming his appointment.

More than three decades of industry experience

Mr Dwyer brings more than 30 years of experience across superannuation, investment management and financial services governance.

He was Chief Executive Officer of First State Super—now known as Aware Super—for 14 years.

During that period, he led the fund through a significant phase of growth and development before leaving the role in 2018.

Before joining First State Super, he spent approximately ten years as General Manager of NSW industry superannuation fund ASSET Super.

Mr Dwyer has also held senior governance roles across public-sector and private financial organisations.

He has served as Chair of NSW Treasury Corporation, known as TCorp, and is currently a non-executive director of financial services technology company Iress.

His other current roles include Director of the Sydney Financial Forum and membership of the Australian Securities and Investments Commission Consultative Panel.

Board welcomes governance experience

Acting State Super Chair Catherine Bolger said Mr Dwyer’s experience in governance, investment and organisational leadership would strengthen the board’s ability to oversee the fund.

She said his appointment would support State Super’s continuing responsibility to act in the best financial interests of its members.

NSW Treasurer Daniel Mookhey said Mr Dwyer had demonstrated strong leadership during his time with TCorp and brought extensive knowledge of the superannuation sector.

The Treasurer said this combination of public-sector governance and industry experience made him well suited to contribute to State Super’s strategic direction.

Focus on members’ financial interests

Mr Dwyer said he was honoured to be appointed and looked forward to working with the State Super Board and executive leadership team.

His responsibilities as Chair will include leading the board’s oversight of investment governance, risk management, organisational strategy and the administration of State Super’s defined benefit schemes.

The role does not involve the day-to-day management of individual investment assets, but carries responsibility for ensuring the trustee maintains appropriate governance and acts in members’ best financial interests.

About State Super

State Super is the trustee of several closed NSW public-sector superannuation schemes.

These include the State Authorities Superannuation Scheme, State Superannuation Scheme and Police Superannuation Scheme.

Although the schemes are generally closed to new members, State Super continues to manage retirement benefits and obligations for current and former NSW public-sector employees and their beneficiaries.

The organisation operates within a complex defined-benefit environment in which investment performance, government funding arrangements, actuarial liabilities and long-term member obligations require sustained oversight.

Mr Dwyer’s experience leading a major superannuation fund and overseeing public financial institutions is expected to support the board as it manages these responsibilities.

His appointment will formally commence on 1 September 2026.
