Statement from the Multicultural NSW Advisory Board

We are a proudly multicultural and multifaith society in New South Wales, a place where people from every part of the world can find their home. Every person in our state has the right to feel safe, regardless of their gender, culture or faith.

It is disappointing to see Senator Hanson’s attempt to ridicule religious observance. The wearing of certain religious attire is a personal, cultural and spiritual decision made by many members of our community on a daily basis. They should not be the subject of attempts to gain media coverage for political advantage.

No member of our community should feel targeted or mocked for practicing their faith. The actions in Federal Parliament go against our Multicultural Principles and the values we hold dear as an inclusive and tolerant society.

We acknowledge the impact this has had on Muslim women within our communities and stand in solidarity with them.

We strongly condemn Senator Hanson’s offensive and divisive stunt.
