SYDNEY’S NEXT GREAT CULTURAL DESTINATION ON THE WAY AT WHITE BAY

The White Bay Power Station will be dedicated as a cultural destination as remediation and repair of the former coal power station hits the halfway mark.

Minister for Infrastructure, Cities and Active Transport Rob Stokes said the remediation of the Bays West precinct, double the size of Barangaroo, was Sydney’s most eagerly anticipated urban renewal project.

“This government ended the decades of decay around our western harbour, commencing the transformation of industrial wastelands into incredible urban renewal sites including Barangaroo, Blackwattle Bay and Bays West,” Mr Stokes said.

“Nothing typified that decay like the old White Bay Power Station and despite previous suggestions it should be knocked down, I’m glad to see it’s now it’s being restored to a landmark building we can all be proud of.

“It’s on the harbour foreshore, next-door to a future Metro station and will be surrounded by hundreds of new homes, with a third set aside for affordable and diverse housing.

“That’s why this harbourside heritage gem can’t be locked away, and why the White Bay Power Station will be dedicated as a cultural destination, open and accessible to the public.”

The Bays West precinct will be a world-class mixed use precinct with stunning public spaces, active transport links and space for commercial, residential and community uses.

“We’ve spent $88 million transforming this former coal power station into a landmark public building that will be Sydney’s next great cultural space like the Sydney Opera House or Art Gallery or NSW,” Mr Stokes said.

“An advisory committee has been established to determine the exact use of the building, with a brief to create a cultural institution open to the public, which could include temporary activations.”

Remediation works to date include repair works on roofing and guttering, treatment of corroded structural steel and replacement of cladding and damaged timber framing. With Placemaking NSW now appointed as the lead agency to oversee planning and delivery of the Bays West, the focus is on creating an accessible waterfront while continuing to maintain Sydney Harbour’s function as a working harbour.
