The NSW Government will provide $2.7 million over three years to support Tropfest, giving the revived short film festival multi-year funding after its return to Sydney earlier this year.
The funding will support future editions of the free outdoor festival, with the 2027 event scheduled for Saturday, 13 February at The Domain.
It will mark Tropfest’s return to the central Sydney venue and the first time in the festival’s history that its main screening night will be held on a Saturday.
Festival Returned After Seven-Year Hiatus
Tropfest returned in February 2026 following a seven-year hiatus, staging its comeback event at Centennial Park.
More than 30,000 people attended, while organisers received more than 700 submissions from filmmakers.
The festival originated at a Darlinghurst café in 1993 before developing into a major Australian short film event and platform for emerging filmmakers.
16 Short Films to Premiere in 2027
The 2027 festival will feature 16 finalist films making their world premieres at Tropfest.
Tropfest’s competition requires entries to be original short films made specifically for the festival and to incorporate an annual Tropfest Signature Item.
For 2027, the Signature Item is “Necklace”, while films must run for no more than seven minutes including credits.
Official competition entries are limited to Australian citizens and residents, although international filmmakers can submit films for out-of-competition consideration.
Submissions Open in December
Submissions for Tropfest 2027 will open on Tuesday, 1 December 2026 and close on Monday, 4 January 2027.
Finalists are expected to be notified later in January.
The multi-year funding arrangement gives the festival greater certainty after its 2026 relaunch and is intended to support continued annual events in Sydney.
Public Funding Supports Free Event
The $2.7 million commitment will be spread over three years, allowing Tropfest to remain a free public event while supporting festival production and opportunities for emerging filmmakers.
The NSW Government has framed the investment as part of its broader support for the state’s creative industries and major visitor events.
The festival’s return to The Domain also shifts the event back toward central Sydney after the 2026 edition was held at Centennial Park.
From Relaunch to Multi-Year Program
The new agreement follows Tropfest’s successful re-entry into Sydney’s event calendar in 2026 and moves the festival from a one-off comeback toward a more stable multi-year program.
The 2027 event will take place on 13 February, with 16 finalist films screening under the festival’s traditional world-premiere format.
Further details on the program, judging panel and event schedule are expected closer to the festival date.
