Barangaroo’s popular free harbour swimming spot, Marrinawi Cove, is set for another round of upgrades, with plans to expand public open space and add new changing facilities ahead of summer.
The project will convert part of the adjacent Moore’s Wharf operational area into approximately 380 square metres of additional public space, creating more room for visitors to relax, picnic and enjoy the harbour.
The new works will include:
- Around 380 square metres of additional public open space
- New lawn areas for lounging and picnics
- Additional landscaping, seating and shade
- Dedicated changing facilities
- A redesigned entry area with upgraded paving
The expansion will involve relocating part of the existing eastern fence line and repurposing space currently used by the Port Authority of NSW at Moore’s Wharf.
Construction to Begin in September
Construction is expected to begin in September 2026, with the upgraded facilities planned to open during summer.
Marrinawi Cove is expected to remain open during the works wherever it is safe and practical, with closures generally limited to areas directly affected by construction.
Visitors may experience temporary fencing, localised access changes, construction noise and altered pedestrian routes around the eastern side of the cove.
Second Major Upgrade Since Opening
The latest project follows a first stage of improvements completed in 2025.
Those works delivered:
- A larger swimming area with a realigned shark net
- A new outdoor shower
- A new platform and non-slip stairs for safer access to the water
- Integrated sandstone steps
- Additional space for towels and recreation
- A depth marker to improve swimmer safety
The earlier upgrade also expanded the swimming area by up to 150 square metres, with the swimming length extended to around 45 metres.
Sydney Harbour Swimming Spot Continues to Grow
Marrinawi Cove first opened for swimming in January 2023, becoming Sydney’s first new harbour swimming location in decades.
The free swimming area quickly became popular with residents, CBD workers and visitors, offering access to Sydney Harbour in the heart of Barangaroo.
Barangaroo says the latest improvements respond to strong community use and requests for more space and better facilities around the cove.
The site also has cultural significance as a place where Gadigal people have swum, fished and paddled for thousands of years.
Funded Through Barangaroo Developer Contributions
The new works are being funded through Barangaroo developer contributions and form part of a broader program aimed at improving access to Sydney’s foreshore.
Infrastructure NSW, Port Authority of NSW and Placemaking NSW are working together on the project while maintaining access to Port Authority operations at the neighbouring Moore’s Wharf site.
The Port Authority says essential 24/7 maritime response services will continue during the works.
Once completed, the upgrade will provide more recreational space and improved amenities at one of Sydney Harbour’s most popular free swimming locations.
