Eligible students are being encouraged to apply for the 2027 NSW Aboriginal Allied Health Cadetship program, providing an opportunity to gain paid workplace experience while completing their studies.
The NSW Government program recorded its most successful year to date in 2026, with 25 cadetships offered across a range of 23 recognised allied health professions, including occupational therapy, physiotherapy, speech pathology and pharmacy.
Successful cadets undertake paid employment at a NSW Health facility while continuing their university studies, gaining practical experience in settings including hospitals, outpatient clinics and community health services.
The program also provides financial and cultural support, mentoring and opportunities to build professional networks within NSW Health.
In 2026, a pharmacist and two neuropsychology students joined the program for the first time, while rural cadets outnumbered metropolitan participants for the first time.
The program aims to increase the number of Aboriginal allied health professionals working across the NSW public health system and strengthen education and employment pathways.
One participant, occupational therapy student Anna Westcott, is completing a placement with the Mid North Coast Local Health District, gaining practical experience alongside her university studies.
To be eligible, applicants must identify as Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander, be a NSW resident, and be enrolled in the final two years of full-time study in an eligible allied health course at a NSW university.
