A major $40 million redevelopment of Leichhardt Oval has received planning approval, clearing a key hurdle for the transformation of one of Sydney’s most recognisable suburban sporting grounds.
The approval allows Inner West Council to progress preparations for construction, which is expected to begin after the conclusion of the 2026 sporting season.
The upgraded venue is scheduled to be completed before the start of the 2028 season.
Three levels of government fund upgrade
The redevelopment is being jointly funded by all three levels of government.
The Australian Government has committed $20 million, while the NSW Government and Inner West Council are each contributing $10 million.
Inner West Council will oversee the delivery of the project.
The investment is intended to secure the long-term future of the ground while improving its ability to host professional and community sporting events.
New grandstands and modern facilities
The approved works include the renovation of the historic western grandstand, which will receive new stadium seating and upgraded facilities.
A new northern grandstand will also be constructed, while seating in the lower bowl will be replaced.
Modern hospitality and media facilities will be introduced to improve conditions for spectators, broadcasters and event operators.
The redevelopment will also deliver four NRL-compliant, female-friendly change rooms, supporting the continued growth of women’s professional and community sport.
The Wayne Pearce Hill and other elements associated with the ground’s traditional suburban atmosphere are expected to be retained.
Supporting professional and grassroots sport
Leichhardt Oval has hosted rugby league matches since the 1930s and remains one of the spiritual homes of the Wests Tigers.
Often referred to by supporters as the “Eighth Wonder of the World”, the venue is known for its grass hill, intimate atmosphere and proximity between spectators and the field.
The redevelopment is designed to preserve those characteristics while bringing the venue’s seating, player facilities and operational infrastructure up to contemporary standards.
Once completed, the ground is expected to remain capable of hosting men’s and women’s NRL matches, A-League fixtures and other major sporting events.
It will also continue to serve local sporting clubs, junior competitions, development pathways and community programs across Sydney’s Inner West.
Work to follow 2026 season
Planning approval does not mean construction has already begun.
The project will now move through its remaining procurement, construction planning and site preparation stages.
Major work is expected to commence after the 2026 season to minimise disruption to scheduled sporting events.
The redevelopment is expected to support approximately 130 construction jobs during delivery.
NSW Planning and Public Spaces Minister Paul Scully said the final design had been shaped by community feedback and aimed to modernise the ground without losing the close-to-the-action experience valued by supporters.
NSW Sport Minister Steve Kamper said the investment would allow Leichhardt Oval to remain an important venue for professional competitions, women’s sport and grassroots participation.
Inner West Mayor Darcy Byrne described the approval as a significant milestone for Wests Tigers supporters and the wider Inner West community.
With planning approval now secured, the project is one step closer to construction, although fans will need to wait until the 2028 season to experience the fully upgraded venue.
