Vision for Parramatta’s new Chinatown and City Square precinct revealed

Plans set to transform the southern part of Parramatta’s CBD into a vibrant destination with a Chinatown precinct, new civic square, public art, retail, laneways and arcades will be on public exhibition next month.

The proposed night time and Chinatown precinct is the first phase of the CBD South Parramatta Master Plan and features local places including Fitzwilliam Street, Wentworth Street, Chinatown Laneways and Arcades and Church Street, each with their own unique charm.

City of Parramatta Lord Mayor Cr Martin Zaiter said the Master Plan will accelerate Council’s vision to activate the untapped potential of the precinct and increase vibrancy in the southern part of the CBD.

“Parramatta is a City second to none. This Master Plan allows us to truly become a global City by expanding our nightlife and public spaces to build on the success of Parramatta Square, north of the train line,” Cr Zaiter said.

“Since it opened in 2022, Parramatta Square continues to bring vibrancy and nightlife to our CBD and in the last year alone we saw more than eight million visitors in the public domain.

“This is about unlocking the full potential of the southern precinct, so it becomes a lively destination for food, culture and connection.”

Cr Zaiter said the Master Plan provides an opportunity to redevelop Council assets and create new public spaces for the community to enjoy in the heart of the CBD.

“All global cities around the world have a Chinatown precinct that comes alive with wonderful eateries, retail and cultural offerings,” Cr Zaiter said.

“We want to unlock Council-owned sites and create a vibrant destination, full of art, light and colour that people can enjoy especially as we continue to grow into a global City.”

The CBD South Parramatta Precinct (Phase 1) is bound by Church Street, Fitzwilliam Street and Parkes Street, south of the train line.
