Journeys through the southern parts of Sydney will be transformed after the completion of the new Heathcote Bridge by the NSW Liberal and Nationals Government.
Minister for Metropolitan Roads Natalie Ward said the $73 million infrastructure upgrade is the critical link between Greater Sydney and Wollongong as well as the 22,000 motorists who use it every day.
“The Liberal and Nationals Government has listened to the Heathcote community and delivered this new bridge that will provide commuters more reliable and safer journeys,” Mrs Ward said.
“This project was finished on time and on budget despite 60-plus wet weather days and eight flood events during construction.
“This new connection will mean tens of thousands of drivers will spend less time on the road and more time with loved ones as well as boosting productivity which is a significant economic win.”
Member for Heathcote Lee Evans said the new bridge will be open to traffic in a temporary arrangement to allow maintenance work to be carried out on the old bridge.
“I thank the community for its continued patience while this complex and critical project is being delivered,” Mr Evans said.
“A reduced speed limit of 60km/h will be in place while both lanes of traffic are temporarily using the new bridge.
“I am proud of the work the Liberal and Nationals Government has done in listening to the local community and delivering this game changing new bridge that will ease congestion along this busy commuter corridor.”
Only Westbound traffic will use the new bridge when the full project is completed mid year while eastbound traffic uses the existing bridge.
