Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews is resisting industry pressure to scrap mask requirements for hospitality and retail workers.
“At this stage, I’ve got no advice that we’ll be able to take off those mask rules,” he told reporters.
“We have masks on in very few settings at the moment.
“I know they’re frustrating but, at the end of the day, compare where we were six or eight months ago, and then six or eight months before that.”
Andrews also warned winter would be difficult, with an uptick in COVID-19 infections expected from the BA.2 strain of omicron combined with a resurgence in flu cases.
“Winter will be challenging. It always is, whether you’ve got a pandemic or not,” he said.
“Flu, for instance, always knocks our health system around every single winter. So we’re doing a lot of preparatory work at the moment.”
