French President Emmanuel Macron, speaking in Brussels following talks with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, tells reporters: “This is not a crisis, it’s a war.”
“They’ve [Russia] killed several hundred Ukrainian civilians, as indeed we heard directly from President Zelenskyy a few hours ago, when we spoke to him,” Macron says.
He adds Russian President Vladimir Putin: “wants to make European history stutter again, and to bring us back to illogical empire and confrontation”.
Putin has rejected all diplomatic efforts, Macron says, necessitating sanctions, including against Belarus.
“We have decided to inflict severe costs upon Moscow, on different sectors, on different persons,” the French President says.
“Further measures at a government level will be taken.”
