Rules ease as cities ramp up return to office push

NSW Premier Dominic Perrottet and Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews are working on common rules for a return to CBD offices without masks from the start of next month, amid a major easing of COVID-19 restrictions.

Both states have dropped density limits and check-in requirements but NSW has gone a step further, dropping work from home orders from Friday.

Prime Minister Scott Morrison welcomed the announcements as “a further sign that Australia is pushing through and coming out the other side in relation to this pandemic”.

In NSW, the two square metre density limit is being scrapped and QR code check-ins will only required for nightclubs and major music festivals.

Face masks will only remain mandatory in NSW across a limited range of venues from next Friday, February 25, including public transport, planes, airports and hospitals, as both states continue to work on their school plans and the need for masks in classrooms.

“We’ve been working incredibly closely with [Victoria] in relation to these restrictions that we’ve released today to get consistency as much as possible down the eastern seaboard,” Mr Perrottet said.

“It’s another great example of two strong states, the two biggest states in this country, working together for consistency as we work through this pandemic. We want people to come back to our city in a COVID-safe way.

“From time-to-time, we will see cases increase. At other times (they will) decrease. That is not a measure of success or failure; that is living alongside the virus.”
