Beyond omicron: 84pc of Australians positive about overseas travel this year

The annual travel survey by Melbourne-based booking agency Luxury Escapes found 84 per cent of the 1200 Australian respondents are optimistic about international travel being possible in 2022.

More than 55 per cent of respondents intended to spend more than they usually would on an overseas trip this year.

Fiji, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, the United States and Indonesia lead the pack of most desired travel destinations for 2022, while Fiji, Thailand, Indonesia and the Maldives were the most booked overseas trips since August 2021.

More than 66 per cent of Australians say they will splurge on travel in 2022.

The main trend is for “longer, more extravagant” holidays; people are also looking to pay more or use loyalty points for a room upgrade, spa treatment or other spoiling activity.

“We’re already seeing an increase in average booking value with many customers having boosted their savings while in lockdown,” said Adam Schwab, co-founder and CEO of Luxury Escapes.
