Authorities believe 90 per cent of NSW cases are omicron

NSW Chief Health Officer Dr Kerry Chant says testing from one pathology company shows 90 per cent of coronavirus cases in the state are of the omicron strain.

The other 10 per cent are of the delta strain. Chant says that mix will be different depending on the geographical area.

In intensive care, between December 1 to December 7, 90 per cent of admissions had the delta coronavirus strain, while the other 10 per cent were omicron.

But that has now shifted: in NSW intensive care wards between December 29 to January 4, 33 per cent of cases were delta and 67 per cent were omicron.

“The vaccines work,” Chant says.

“Boosters really improve your level of protection including against omicron and I cannot urge you enough to please, book in now and get vaccinated.”
