Almost 500 people told they tested negative are COVID positive

A Sydney pathology lab that prematurely told almost 1000 people they had tested negative for COVID-19 has confirmed 486 results were actually positive.

On Monday SydPath said 995 people tested on December 23 and 24 were told they had returned negative results when their tests had not yet been processed.

The lab also confirmed on Sunday that more than 400 people were incorrectly told they had tested negative when they were positive.

Both instances were due to human error, the lab said.

“We have identified what occurred and can confirm it was related to a specific human error. SydPath have put procedures in place to ensure this cannot happen again,” a statement on Monday said.

It comes as testing demand reaches unprecedented demand and wait times blow out.
