Victoria planning state booster drive from January 4

Victoria is aiming to ramp up its state based vaccination hubs from after the Christmas holiday season.

COVID-19 Commander Jeroen Weimar says there will be a significant drive for vaccination boosters “particularly from January 4”.

“Let’s use the Christmas Week to plan our boosters,” he says. “There is plenty of vaccine available to deliver the program. We really want to hit the New Year very hard indeed to get as many of those booster doses done right at the beginning of January.”

Weimar say more than a quarter of the tests are coming from interstate travellers and the state has lifted its testing capacity by 55 per cent since October.

Weimar says there are 19 hubs open for booster shots but that staffing is a major challenge.

“We are now literally pulling in hundreds of our vaccine immunisers working in the peak of the program, back in September, October,” he says.

“We are facing a significant challenge of course in the health care sector where many of our staff rightly deserve and absolutely need [time off].”
