NSW Health Minister Brad Hazzard warns people need to keep being COVID-safe as epidemiologists warn him the state could be looking at 25,000 COVID-19 cases per day.
The state’s effective reproductive rate is at about 1.7 – the number of people an infected person passes the virus to.
Hazzard says this could rise where NSW would see 25,000 cases per day in coming months.
“So that takes us … to about 175,000 in a week,” Hazzard says.
“Stay outside if you can, wear those masks, get tested if you have any viral symptoms at all.”
Chief Health Officer Dr Kerry Chant says omicron is contributing to the reff number growing.
“I would urge everyone to continue to wear masks in indoor environments,” Chant says.
“It’s a very tiny act and you’re actually protecting yourself, but more importantly you’re protecting others.”
