West Gate Tunnel boring by early, mid-2022

Melbourne’s troubled $6.7 billion West Gate Tunnel project should be tunnelling by early to mid-2022, Victorian transport infrastructure minister Jacinta Allan has told the Financial Review’s Infrastructure Summit.

A dispute between the state government, tollroad operator Transurban and builders CIMIC and John Holland over who should pay for the expense of disposing of contaminated soil stopped tunnelling in 2019, delaying the project’s completion by at least two years.

The government and the companies have been negotiating over how to split the additional costs, which Transurban has estimated at $3.3 billion.

But contractors have forecast the cost of delays could reach more than $5 billion.
