NSW reports 681 new local cases, regional lockdown extended

NSW has reported 681 new local coronavirus cases and the death of a man in his 80s.

He had received one dose of the vaccine and had underlying health conditions.

The state also reported a record 110,000 people who got a vaccine dose yesterday. About 28 per cent of the NSW residents are fully vaccinated.

The lockdown for regional NSW has been extended until August 28.

NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian says cases are still “bubbling away” in western NSW where the majority of infections are among Indigenous people.

“There are vast areas of regional NSW where there are not any cases,” Berejiklian says.

“But everybody would appreciate and expect us to take a precautionary response, given we have the opportunity to get down to zero cases in the regions.”
