It’s been a tough year but that’s no excuse to hit the booze hard on New Year’s Eve.
Health experts are reminding Aussies of alcohol-related risks and encouraging a safe and healthy December 31 celebration.
“It’s been a challenging year for all of us and it’s understandable people will want to celebrate 2020 finally being over,” Alcohol and Drug Foundation CEO Erin Lalor said on Tuesday.
“There’s no doubt many Australians are looking forward to 2021 and we want everyone to have a healthy and safe start to the new year, including minimising the risk of alcohol-related harm such as accidents, illness and injuries.”
Emergency services usually report a high number of alcohol-related call outs on New Year’s Eve.
The foundation is reminding people of guidelines which recommend no more than four standard drinks in one day, and not more than 10 across a week.
A ‘standard drink’ is less than most people think, Dr Lalor says. It means 285ml of full-strength beer or a 100ml glass of wine.
“If you have found yourself drinking more alcohol than normal this year and want to cut back, or you are just wanting to drink less, there are loads of resources and support available,” she said.
“There are a wide range of benefits associated with reduced alcohol intake, from getting a better night’s sleep, saving money, or feeling more motivated to get up and seize the day.”
Basic recommendations when consuming alcohol include eating before and while drinking, not driving or swimming, taking sips and not gulps, and having a non-alcoholic beverage every second drink.
