Jobs data shows marginal improvement

Australia’s jobless rate has improved by 0.1 per cent to 5.1 per cent, according to employment figures for December.

The seasonally adjusted results showed the underemployment rate remaining steady at 8.3 per cent, the Australian Bureau of Statistics announced on Wednesday.

The result comes after consumer confidence fell in January for the fifth consecutive month, according to the Westpac-Melbourne Institute consumer sentiment index.

The Reserve Bank may take the results into account when it meets on February 4 to consider a possible cut to the cash rate.
