Vocus says NBN is undermining competition

Vocus Group chief executive Kevin Russell says the NBN is creating a broadband market that undermines competition and discourages private investment.

Mr Russell says the national broadband network is using taxpayer funds to build fibre in areas already well served by private infrastructure, while the government-owned network’s efforts to directly target business customers is inconsistent with its wholesale only mandate.

“For the long-term health of the industry, infrastructure competition has to be encouraged, rather than penalised,” Mr Russell says in his speech to Vocus’s annual general meeting on Tuesday.
