Chinese Australians targeted by scammers

Authorities are warning Australia’s Chinese community to be wary of scams that have already bilked about 900 people out of more than $1.5 million this year alone.

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission on Monday said that Mandarin speakers have called Chinese Australians and threatened them with extradition unless money is sent to them.

Chinese students have also been tricked into taking photos of themselves bound and gagged, and the pictures have then been used to extort money from their family.
