SPRING IN TO THOROUGHBRED RACING

Fans of thoroughbred racing are back on track in a big way with the highly anticipated Sydney Everest and marquee regional race the Kosciuszko being run at Royal Randwick this Saturday.

Minister for Racing Kevin Anderson said this year’s carnival has already proven to be bigger and better than ever with record crowds to watch Australia’s best horse racing and experience the nation’s best hospitality.

“Royal Randwick and Rosehill Gardens play host to the world’s best horses over the Sydney Everest Carnival and spectators are expected trackside in droves to experience the hospitality of the Australian Turf Club and surrounding businesses,” Mr Anderson said.

“This Carnival is bringing people from all over the world with more than 130,000 people expected to attend. This will generate around $100 million to the NSW economy, with a substantial amount of that being spent in the hospitality sector.

“The thoroughbred racing industry employs around 36,000 people but the flow on effects are much greater. People come to town for a day at the races and they spend money at hotels, pubs and restaurants, growing the NSW economy. Congratulations to Racing NSW and all owners, trainers and connections for the work they do in making this possible.

“Events include the Epsom Handicap, Golden Rose, The Metropolitan, Flight Stakes, Spring Champion Stakes, the George Main Stakes, the $15 million The Everest and my favourite, the Kosciuszko, putting the spotlight on regional horses, trainers and connections.

“The $2 million Kosciuszko will feature 14 NSW country-trained gallopers and is the richest race in the world for country horses giving regional trainers the chance to compete on the big stage.”
Australian Turf Club Chief Executive Jamie Barkley said Sydney’s Spring racing was the hottest ticket in town.

“Royal Randwick is ready for a record day, the richest in prizemoney in its history, and an atmosphere like never before,’’ Mr Barkley said.

General Admission ticket holders and Australian Turf Club Members also have free access to all public transport services, including light rail services directly to Royal Randwick.
