The 2027 Premier’s Anzac Memorial Scholarship study tour will travel to Germany, Belgium and France, giving NSW history students the opportunity to visit major European sites connected with the First and Second World Wars.
Up to 18 students and three accompanying teachers will take part in the tour during the 2027 Term 3 school holidays, travelling with a military historian to battlefields, memorials, museums and other historic locations.
Tour to Cover Major European War Sites
The itinerary will include several locations associated with Australia’s wartime experience and the broader history of the two world wars.
Planned destinations include the Reichstag in Berlin, the former Nuremberg Rally Grounds, the Normandy D-Day landing beaches, Western Front battlefields connected with fighting in 1917, and the Menin Gate Memorial in Belgium.
The Menin Gate will mark its centenary in 2027 and remains one of the major memorials commemorating Commonwealth soldiers who died in the Ypres Salient during the First World War.
The tour is designed to complement classroom history studies by allowing students to examine battlefields, memorials and historical evidence in the locations where major events took place.
Scholarship Open to NSW History Students
The Premier’s Anzac Memorial Scholarship is administered by the NSW Office for Veterans Affairs.
For 2027, students eligible to apply will be those studying Year 10 History or Year 11 Modern History in NSW. Student applications are expected to open in February 2027.
The scholarship program covers study tours to locations associated with Australian military history and is intended to develop students’ understanding of service, conflict and commemoration.
Participants travel as a group with teachers and a military historian and take part in educational visits and commemorative activities throughout the tour.
Teacher Applications Now Open
Applications are already open for the three teachers who will accompany the 2027 group.
Applicants must be qualified History teachers currently working in a NSW high school, hold a valid Working with Children Check and be Australian citizens or permanent residents.
Experience teaching Stage 5 History or Stage 6 Modern History is considered highly desirable.
Teachers will also be required to attend a pre-tour meeting at the Anzac Memorial in Sydney on 5 July 2027 and be available for the overseas tour, expected to run from around 24 September to 7 October 2027.
Applications for accompanying teachers close at 11.59pm on 23 November 2026.
2026 Tour Focused on Greece and Crete
The 2027 European itinerary follows this year’s scholarship tour to Greece and Crete, where 18 students and three teachers visited sites connected with the 1941 campaigns.
The two-week program included battlefields, war cemeteries, museums and memorials and coincided with the 85th anniversary of the Greece and Crete campaigns.
Previous scholarship tours have also taken students to locations connected with conflicts including the Korean War and the Second World War.
2027 Applications Continue Into Next Year
Teacher recruitment is the first stage of preparations for the 2027 tour.
Student applications are expected to begin in February, with successful applicants later joining the three teachers and military historian for the European study program during the September–October school holiday period.
The final student group and detailed tour itinerary are expected to be announced closer to departure.
