NSW Government buildings in the Sydney CBD, including the Sydney Opera House, Sydney Harbour Bridge and Parliament House will go dark at 9pm this evening in support of Ukraine as the country prepares for the onset of winter amidst warfare.
December 21 is the shortest day of the year in the Northern Hemisphere, and the darkness is a symbolic act of support as many people in Ukraine face a winter with limited power as a result of the ongoing military action.
NSW is home to vibrant Ukrainian communities, and we know the onset of winter and the ongoing military action means many people in our state have real and rising concerns for their loved ones overseas.
Minister for Multiculturalism Mark Coure said turning off the lights as part of the #LightUpUkraine appeal was a simple act but reflected NSW’s heartfelt support for the people of Ukraine.
“Thousands of people in Ukraine face a bitter winter as a result of the Russian military action and our thoughts are with that nation, as well as the Ukrainian communities here in NSW,” Mr Coure said.
“Human life is at risk in Ukraine as a result of Russia’s unsanctioned attacks. We stand alongside the people of Ukraine, as a state and denounce the ongoing violence.”
Minister for Tourism and the Arts Ben Franklin said that the Sydney icons will join City of Sydney landmarks in turning off their lights from 9pm.
“The Sydney Opera House and Sydney Harbour Bridge will be joined by Town Hall and Pitt Street Mall to further show the support our state has with the people of Ukraine,” Mr Franklin said.
