The hotels are booked, the bags are packed and the trucks are fueled up as the best country horses, trainers and connections make their way to Royal Randwick for the inaugural $2 million Big Dance and $500,000 Little Dance.
Minister for Racing Kevin Anderson said after months of preparation, The Big Dance and The Little Dance are finally upon us.
“For many country owners and trainers these races are the chance to realise a dream and change lives,” Mr Anderson said.
“Thoroughbred racing is a big part of life for many people living in country and regional NSW but in the past it has been tough for these trainers to get the recognition they deserve. Events like the Big and Little Dances, the Kosciuszko and the Country Championships put regional horses on the map and give them a chance at some serious prizemoney.
“Horse racing is big business in NSW and the way Racing NSW and the industry is constantly innovating has seen the sport grow at unprecedented levels.”
Mr Anderson said the final field for the Big Dance consists of horses which have won one of 25 NSW Country Cups throughout the year, and the Little Dance gives the runners up their chance at record prizemoney and recognition.
“The Big Dance and The Little Dance will strengthen the quality of country racing and give our horses, owners and connections a shot at some big prizemoney while also being able to promote their respective region,” Mr Anderson said.
“The economic benefits of horse racing extend well beyond prizemoney. People come to town for an event like the Country Cups and spend money in local restaurants and cafes and purchase from local stores. Everyone wins when the races are in town.”
