SE Qld infrastructure spend to create 2000 jobs: PM

Prime Minister Scott Morrison has announced a $1.8 billion infrastructure spend for south-east Queensland with the confirmation of another city deal.

The Commonwealth is contributing $667 million to the partnership Morrison says will result in 2000 jobs.

“It goes to the liveability and connectability of this entire region,” Morrison told reporters at the Gabba.

The city deal includes a rebuild of the Gabba ahead of the 2032 Olympic Games and a new interchange with the Brisbane Metro.

Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said: “It’s actually another chunk in that armour of infrastructure that is absolutely necessary for the growing population of the south-east, delivering jobs.”

Morrison defended the timing of the deal which was announced in 2019, citing pandemic-induced delays.

He said these things took time to get right and the deal was completed as quickly as possible.

The deal includes $40 million for river and soil health to help protect against flooding.
